The following three fatherhood preparation services are modules of the Fatherhood Development Workshop.
FATHERHOOD PREPARATION
Fatherhood Development Workshop:
An intensive five-week training program focusing on parenting, job readiness, education preparation, responsible fatherhood, sexual responsibility and other life skills. This workshop has been the mainstay of the Center.
Employment Preparation Services:
Building upon an assessment of participants past job history as well as personal areas of interest and aptitude, the Canter’s Workforce Development Manager assists clients as they prepare for employment. Focus areas include interviewing techniques, resume preparation, networking and conducting job searches.
Parenting Classes:
Provides important information needed to improve fathers' parenting skills and to improve relationships between fathers and their children. In the sessions, fathers develop written goals for rearing their children. The instructor teaches appropriate expectations, child health, safety, wellness information and appropriate discipline methods.
Doctor Dad:
A class designed to increase fathers' parenting skills when caring for the heath of their children. The class also helps fathers to realize that they are a play an important role in caring for their children.
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
GED Preparation:
In individualized or small group tutoring sessions, the Center offers GED preparation sessions that run daily during office hours.
Scholarship Assistance:
The education coordinator assists individuals who have completed high school or have their GED to prepare for scholarships and other financial aid applications.
Higher Education/Vocational Training Advising:
For those who contemplate furthering their education, the Education Coordinator works to prepare them for college or for vocational training alternatives.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Job Club:
The job club meets once a week to discuss employment opportunities and to find more effective ways to search for employment. The club is open to former participants who want to improve their job searching skills.
Personal Finance Class:
Sessions that will help program participants to budget, interpret credit reports, track expenses and become more financially stable.
Anger Management:
Facilitates father involvement and to improve co-parenting and other relationships. Training and counseling services help class participants identify and address the issues triggering their anger responses and learn new ways to communicate their feelings.
Pre-Marital or Marriage Counseling:
Using a nationally-acclaimed assessment instrument called "Prepare/ Enrich," the Center staff conducts sessions for those contemplating engagement and/or marriage or simply desiring to strengthen their relationships. Counseling services are also intended to increase fathers' involvement with their children through negotiated, cooperative co-parenting counseling, and improved co-parenting relationships.
Support Services:
Provides information and referral services for participants in various areas.
