Kevin Griffen was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 12, 1974. He is the biological child of Karen Reeves and James Griffen. As a child of a single parent he was raised in the Riverside area in a household with approximately eight other people. As with many young African American youth, Kevin had a difficult growing up experience in the streets and school. Notwithstanding, Kevin graduated from Northwest High school. As a member of the ROTC, he excelled in Marksmanship and became the highest non-commissioned officer at Northwest High School.
By the ages of 21, Kevin had a son with his girlfriend who was still in high school. To prepare himself to be a better father he enrolled in the Father Resource Program in 1995. He successfully completed the program and three years later signed up for the military in 1998. While enrolled in tech school he earned a certificate for plumbing and graduated at the top of his class. He then returned home to his National Guard Unit in January, 1999. Since being in the Reserves, Kevin has served his country in Germany and Afghanistan. During the year he spent in Afghanistan he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In March, 2002, Kevin married his high school sweetheart. Today, they have 3 children ages 10, 7, and 4. He is an active member of his church and recently has been hired as a member of the Indianapolis Fire Department.
